Shelton: School Staffing Cuts Could Be Revised Down

Under a new plan put forward by Fayette County Superintendent Tom Shelton, schools could see a smaller cut in staffing than anticipated.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Shelton is discussing a 3 percent cut – down from a previously floated 5 percent cut. He says the district would still absorb a $20 million dollar shortfall, but more cuts would be made at the district level. That would ease the pain on individual schools.

A 3 percent cut could result in the loss of about 90 teaching positions.

School board members are expecting a more detailed draft budget proposal in the next few days.
