Fayette County Public Schools officials are working to balance the need for diverse schools and a workable busing plan.
The school board began the process a week ago by adopting guidelines for assigning students to schools.
Fayette County Superintendent Tom Shelton told the Lexington Herald-Leader he wants to see more diversity in schools, but not a system that transports students from far ends of the county to the other.
A new high school on Winchester Road and two new elementary schools have made the redistricting of all of Lexington's public-school boundaries a necessity. At the last school board meeting, Shelton noted that the current plan has some students unable to attend schools they can see from their homes.
A redistricting committee will be named in the coming months. Among their priorities: ensuring that students in Fayette County schools are economically diverse.
The district has grown by an average 750 students annually for the past several years and several middle and high schools are over capacity.
