Superintendent Shelton Pulls Budget Briefing From Meeting Agenda

Fayette County Public Schools

A major agenda item has been removed from tonight's Fayette County School Board meeting.

Fayette County Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton says because of “distrust and widespread speculation” the school board will not discuss potential layoffs and budget cuts as originally planned.

A release from FCPS says even though a group of principals and district leaders has been meeting about the situation since last fall and had intended to present their recommendations to the school board this evening, Shelton says those procedures have been pulled from tonight’s agenda and that “no changes will be made until the district has provided ample opportunities for public input.”

Critics, including parents, and some school board members charged that the budgeting process had been too secretive.  The first public forum on the budget has been scheduled for Thursday March 6th at 6 p.m. in the district’s main offices.

Fayette County Schools will need to trim about 5% from its general fund budget to to offset a reported 20 million dollar deficit.
