Kaydence Carpenter, 20, was lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center on March 22.

20-year-old Kaydence Carpenter faces four counts of second-degree assault, along with charges of wanton endangerment, DUI, reckless driving and using a false ID.

Prosecutors say Carpenter drove onto a curb and struck four pedestrians near Short and Mill streets on March 22 before continuing the wrong way down West Short Street.

According to court records and police citations, the specific charges brought against her include:

  • Four counts of Second-Degree Assault: Stemming from the four pedestrians who were struck by the vehicle and required hospital care.
  • First-Degree Wanton Endangerment: Filed because her driving allegedly placed multiple people and other vehicles in extreme danger.
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence (DUI): Officers noted she showed signs of intoxication, smelled of alcohol, and failed field sobriety tests.
  • Reckless Driving: For driving over a curb and proceeding the wrong way down Short Street, a one-way roadway.
  • Use of a False Identification Card: Officers discovered a fake ID during a search of her vehicle.
  • Alcoholic Beverage Control Licensee Offense: Charged for allowing a person under the age of 21 to remain on a premises where alcohol is sold.

Defense attorney Dan Carman says witness video shows people surrounding and hitting Carpenter's vehicle before it accelerated, and that one person appeared to be holding a firearm.

Carpenter remains free on bond. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Sept. 3.
