The High Street YMCA was sold to a Florida-based developer with an eye toward constructing more student housing — leaving the future of the more than 60-year-old location in limbo.
Although the idea of building a new companion facility next to the student housing was floated, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports the YMCA of Central Kentucky Board has opted to sell the entire property and seek a new location.
The YMCA has hired a consultant to begin that process.
YMCA of Central Kentucky board chair Steve Byars says the decision gives the organization a chance to build upon the original location's legacy "in ways that reflect how our community continues to grow and change.”
The location first opened as a gym in 1962.
