Beshear hits the late night TV circuit with Seth Meyers appearance

NBC

It was another first for Gov. Andy Beshear Tuesday night, when the Kentucky governor was a guest on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Just days after signing a deal with SiriusXM that will vastly expand his reach, Beshear plugged his podcast on Late Night — fielding questions on his electoral success as a Democratic governor in a solidly red state, a feat that Meyers joked many will think "can't possibly be true."

"I think everybody maybe is looking to you to ask this question of what is the secret and what would you say is the best advice you'd give to them?" Meyers quizzed.

"The best advice I can give is three parts... first, make sure you're spending that 80 percent of your time on people's everyday needs," Beshear began.

His other pieces of advice: cut out political jargon and explain the "why" behind policy positions, taking note of how people feel regardless of what the data may say.

The interview was bookended by lighter topics, notably Beshear's ongoing quest to master Gen Z lingo with some help from his son, Will.

"How's that been going?" Meyers asked.

"Well, it tends to make Dad look a thousand years old," Beshear joked. "But in episode one, I learned the difference between something being skibidi or fire. And on episode two, I've learned I'm doing all this for the plot."

The late night debut is only the latest move Beshear has made to broaden his national audience as he prepares to take the reins at the Democratic Governors Association in 2026 and — possibly — mount a presidential campaign in 2028.
