A closed-door comment by Sen. Mitch McConnell reported by online outlet Punchbowl News is prompting pushback from Democrats. Now, the senator is out with a response.

McConnell reportedly told Republicans in a behind-the-scenes talks that people worried about the Senate's reconciliation bill will "get over it," with initial reports suggesting the lawmaker was referring to Medicaid cuts.

That drew quick response from opponents like California Democratic Rp. Eric Swalwell.

"I am going to guess you're not gonna get over it. Don't get over it. Reach out to your senators. Reach out to your House members," he urged in an online video post.

A McConnell spokesperson now says the remarks were about "the people who are abusing Medicaid" and "the need to withstand Democrats' scare tactics when it comes to Medicaid."

The intent, the spokesman said, was to highlight the message that everyone should be against waste, fraud, and abuse.

The comments come as the Senate moves to pass its version of the signature Trump spending package with the aim of getting the bill to the president's desk by a July 4 deadline. Failing to get the bill across the finish line is, according to McConnell's reported statements "not an option."
