Kentucky's Sextortion Law goes into effect Friday

Associated Press

Kentucky lawmakers passed and signed Senate Bill 73 in March, and it becomes effective this Friday. It makes Sexual Extortion, also known as Sextortion a felony and requires education in schools.

The FBI has released a video it hopes will bring nationwide attention to the crime.

"Sextortion is a serious crime that occurs when someone threatens to distribute your private and sensitive material if you don't provide them images of a sexual nature, sexual favors, or money. The perpetrator may also threaten to harm your friends or relatives by using information they have obtained from your electronic devices unless you comply with their demands."

Here are some tips from the FBI to prevent yourself from becoming a victim:

  • Never send compromising images of yourself to anyone.
  • Do not open attachments to people you don't know.
  • Turn off your electronic devices and web cameras when you aren't using them.

Contact the FBI if you become a victim of Sextrotion and if you are a minor, tell a trusted adult.

This Friday Senator Julie Raque Adams will receive the Sextortion Legislation Award to commemorate Kentucky's unanimous passage of Sextortion legislation.
