Kentucky death toll rises to 19 as communities sift through storm and tornado damage

Governor's Office

The death toll from this weekend's tornadoes has risen to at least 19 in Kentucky, with the addition of one woman from Russell County. And state officials warn the number could still rise.

As of Sunday afternoon, ten Kentuckians at UK Hospital were being treated for injuries. Three remained in critical condition, four had been upgraded to “fair” and three to “good” condition. That's according to Gov. Andy Beshear, who has been on the ground in affected areas.

"It's hard to see," Beshear said. "You can not only see the destruction, but feel it."

Most of the fatalities occurred in southeastern Laurel County, where hundreds of homes were partially or completely destroyed. The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF2 also touched down in Russell County before making its way into Pulaski County — the two other areas where fatalities have now been confirmed.

Survey teams were expected on the ground in Kentucky on Monday so the state begin the now-familiar process of applying for federal disaster assistance.

In all, more than two dozen people died as a result of the storms that blew across the South and parts of the Midwest.
