The 127,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace and apartment complex would sit opposite of Lexington's Frederick Douglass High School and near the Patchen Wilkes subdivision. Neighbors were invited to hear from developers as the project brings new questions, concerns, and anticipation.
Maureen Helt lives nearby in Patchen Lake Townhomes. She says she and others are curious about traffic, high schoolers crossing Winchester, and how many people the Kroger might bring through their neighborhood.
"We're wondering how close it's going to be. Like, are people going to be coming from those commercial properties and walking through our community," she said.
Helt was one of more than 100 people who showed up to hear more. They asked about a traffic study for Winchester Road — one is forthcoming — light pollution, preserving historical aspects of Patchen Wilkes Farm and access for pedestrians.
Darby Turner, an attorney for the applicant, said he felt the meeting went well.
"We'd like to get as much out on the table and feedback as we can early on," he said. "We can better deal with it and better manage expectations."
The development falls in the city's Sixth District. Councilwoman Denise Gray said Wednesday's meeting was only the first of many chances to weigh in.
"There will be numerous opportunities at the planning hearings for residents to come and give their say so. They can always email LFUCG planning to get any questions asked," she said.
A public hearing on the required zone change for the project is set for June 26 at the government center.
