The nation’s leading Thoroughbred racing organizations have formed an industry-led effort to make the sport safer. More from WUKY’s Karyn Czar.
Kevin Flannery, President of Churchill Downs said the newly formed group is committed to improving industry racing standards to protect the sport’s athletes, both human and equine.
Flannery and others on the panel said they are in the beginning stages of the Thoroughbred Safety Coalition but are determined to make medical, operational and organizational changes.
Some of the standards the group want to implement are extending the time a horse is off steroids before racing, having horse’s health records follow them throughout their career and lives, creating an electronic veterinary reporting system with easily accessible information, mandating necropsies on all fatally injured horses, and collecting racing surface data.
