Blue Grass Airport saw an uptick in passengers in 2014, setting a new record for airport.
Blue Grass bested its previous 2004 record by serving over 1.2M passengers last year – that’s a 9.5 percent increase. Airport executive director Eric Frankl attributes the numbers to a few factors, including three new daily nonstop American Airlines flights from Lexington to Philadelphia and additional seasonal service to Myrtle Beach.
While the stats are encouraging, airport spokesperson Amy Caudill says it’s hard to know if the gains will hold into 2015.
"Of course we always hope to see improvements in the amount of service that's being offered from the airport, but it is also very difficult at times because we don't necessarily control whether or not an airline is going to add seats into our market, so it's very hard to plan in our industry, but we certainly do our best to work with the airlines to get new service options for our passengers," she said.
One event that is expected to boost the numbers for Blue Grass, however, is the Breeder’s Cup, which comes to Keeneland for the first time in October.
