Kentucky's senior senator is turning heads with his latest comments about former President Donald Trump.
Just weeks after blasting the former president as "practically and morally responsible" for provoking the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, McConnell had a ready answer when asked whether he would support another Trump run in 2024 if the former president made it on to the ballot.
"If the president was the party's nominee, would you support him?" Fox News' Brett Baier asked.
"The nominee of the party? Absolutely," the mirority leader answered.
Earlier New York Times reporting suggested McConnell favored purging Trump from the party, but GOP leaders have since acknowledged that polls show Republican voters are not on the same page. A recent Morning Consult survey found 54 percent of GOP respondents said they would back Trump in a hypothetical 2024 presidential primary.
The former president is slated to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando Sunday.
