Fayette County Public Schools Will Begin The Spring Semester On-Line

FCPS

Fayette County Public Schools will begin the spring semester virtually. Last night Acting Superintendent Marlene Helm recommended remote learning through at least January 22nd based on the 7-day average of new COVID-19 cases in the county which reached more than 200 on Monday. “We know that this is not the decision that some students and families and community members and teachers; it’s not the decision we were hoping for or wanting. However, the data tells us that this is the best route at this particular time.”

Helm also laid out a communication plan that will keep parents and guardians in the loop. It includes a weekly update every Tuesday and several resources to get the information like emails, texts, and on-line access, and decisions will be made in two-week intervals. Next Tuesday, a determination will be made regarding the week of January 25th. Once Fayette County does go back to the classroom, it will be a gradual return.

Here’s the breakdown:

- Phase 1: Grades K-2
- Phase 2: Grades 3-6, 9, 12
- Phase 3: Grades: 7, 8, 10, 11
- Phase 4: Preschool

The board also announced the search is officially underway for a new superintendent following the death of Manny Caulk last month. The goal is to have the position filled by July 1st.
