2021 Winter Storm Part II Brings Slick Roads, Cancellations And Outages

Karyn Czar

Icy conditions have caused closures across the Commonwealth this morning and state and local officials are asking you not to travel today unless necessary. Road crews are working non-stop but there is a layer of ice beneath the snowfall and it may be too cold for the salt to be effective.

Gov. Andy Beshear said state office buildings are closed today. Employees who can telecommute and essential employees designated for mandatory operations should continue to report to work as directed by agency management. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton announced that city offices that are not involved in weather response are closed and there will not be any waste pick-up today.

The University of Kentucky has canceled in-person classes and offices are closed. Plan B designated employees do report to work today. Wild Health COVID-19 testing is closed and The COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Kroger Field is closed today, and its volunteers are asked not to report. For those who had an appointment at the vaccination clinic today, you will be contacted about rescheduling.

Fayette County Public Schools were supposed to reopen for in-person learning for students in Kindergarten, first and second grade today but have instead called a snow day for all students. The day will be made up on March 19th.

Last Thursday, winter weather shut down three regional vaccination sites, including Lexington's. This week, Frankfort's location will close today. If you had an appointment for today, it will be moved to next Tuesday at the same time. The remainder of the Kroger regional centers see patients Thursday through Saturday, so their schedules will depend on developing weather conditions later in the week.

There are about 151-thousand reported outages in the state with Eastern Kentucky being the hardest hit. Here in Fayette County, there are a few dozen customers reportedly without power.
