New magnet programs coming to Fayette County schools

Fayette County students will have more magnet school program opportunities thanks to a federal grant.

The $15 million Magnet Schools Assistance Program from the U.S. Dept. of Education will pay for three new themes at three schools.

At Breckinridge Elementary, an Innovative Leadership and Civic Engagement Magnet.

At Crawford Middle School: a Leadership Academy for Literacies and Civic Engagement.

And at Harrison Elementary: a Visual, Performing, and Digital Arts Magnet.

The grants are relatively rare, with Fayette being only one of a dozen districts nationwide to receive this round of funding. Planning is set to begin immediately, and the schools will be open to new enrollment in fall 2025.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
