WUKY only Lexington radio station to receive prestigious PMJA honors

WUKY, the University of Kentucky’s NPR-affiliated radio station received multiple honors in the annual Public Media Journalists Association Awards competition for stories produced in 2023.

“This year, we had over 1,450 entries from 144 different organizations (across 33 categories) in our awards contest,” said PMJA Executive Director Christine Paige Diers. “We’re proud to be able to recognize the great journalism across the country through this contest.”

Awards were presented in five divisions representing public media organizations with as few as one to more than 30 newsroom employees.

WUKY took home first place in Division A: Interview Podcast: “The Ricochet Effect Podcast Episode 10: 'I Didn’t Survive to Sit on My Story” - Ending Domestic Violence and Abuse Once and For All!”

WUKY also placed second in Division A: Education Feature: “PLD High School students help spread the word with daily bilingual newscasts”

WUKY also placed second in the category of Division A: Sports Feature: “He just doesn't have that worry in the world” - Kentucky golfer going for gold at Special Olympics.”

“The Public Media Journalists Association Awards are unbelievably competitive and selective,” said WUKY News Director Alan Lytle. “When a station takes home a PMJA it truly means you’ve been recognized for doing top-of-the-industry level work.”

The awards were announced at the annual PMJA conference which this year was held June 5-7, 2024 at the NPR studios in Washington, DC.
