The winning design will be presented to the Frankfort City Commission for approval to replace the current flag, which dates back to 1959.
Jim Seaver is communications chair of the Frankfort Flag Initiative, a citizen-led group operating at no cost to taxpayers. He said the Initiative's goal is to create a flag which is easily memorable and recognizable.
"If you think about what makes a good flag, it should have a fairly simple design with symbolism that really connects with people and is transparent in terms of what it tells you about a community and what is important to the people of that community," said Seaver.
Across the over 100 designs submitted to the Initiative, two key elements kept reappearing.
"Stars, to symbolize that we are the Capital city for the state of Kentucky," said Seaver, "And also the distinctive curve of the river that runs through Frankfort."
Once the poll closes on September 15, the Initiative will review the top choice and present a final design to the Frankfort City Commission later this fall.
Seaver said his metric for success is something the group's founder, Tom Farmer, said to him.
"The hallmark of a good city or state flag is that, at some point, you will encounter it in the wild as a tattoo."
