Parent lodging corruption complaint over Fayette school board tax vote

Matthew Vied made it clear at Monday night's regular school board meeting that he sees the board's actions surrounding a recent vote on property taxes as grounds for legal action, and now he's filing a public corruption complaint with the attorney general over the matter.

Vied laid out his issue with the board's actions this way:

"You guys amended the agenda, created an action item, then voted on it at what you call a planning meeting that doesn't have public comment. One of the board members wasn't even present for this vote," he said. "It is egregious what you guys did."

Vied, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for school board in 2022, maintains a taxing district like FCPS asking for a tax rate above the compensating rate is required to hold a meeting with public comment.

Fayette County School Board chair Tyler Murphy responded to the accusation, referring feed to a Kentucky Department of Education review of related statutes.

"KDE conducted a thorough review of the statutory requirements. That review determined that the statutes permit local boards of education like ours to adopt the tax rate up to and including the 4% tax rate, without advertising the tax rate or holding a public hearing," he said.

But not everyone on the school board is satisfied with that answer. Board member. Amanda Ferguson told the Lexington Herald-Leader she is asking that the board hold a special meeting to revisit the tax rate and allow public comment.
