Louisville Democrat Nima Kulkarni sees a path to retaining Kentucky House seat

FRANKFORT, June 5 – Rep. Nima Kulkarni, D-Louisville, asks officials from the Department of Juvenile Justice about juvenile transfers to other facilities in the state during Wednesday’s Budget Review Subcommittee on Justice and Judiciary meeting.

The saga of Kentucky’s House District 40 continues, with a new Supreme Court ruling that could clear a path for the previous occupant of the seat to retain it.

Louisville’s Nima Kulkarni was disqualified in the District 40 race this year over a paperwork discrepancy – with only one of the two required signatures on her filing paperwork being a registered Democrat at the time.

Now, the state Supreme Court has weighed in, agreeing that the disqualification was justified.

But back in the primaries, Kulkarni sailed to a win and the lawmaker is looking for a way to keep the seat. And an opinion by Secretary of State Michael Adams could provide that opening.

Adams says the Supreme Court ruling means the results of the primary don’t count and no officially recognized election occurred. The result: Both parties could put up a candidate in the November election.

WDRB reports that Kulkarni’s team believes the party could appoint her as their nominee, potentially allowing her to hold on to the seat.
