A recent survey by the League of American Bicyclists ranks Kentucky in the bottom third of bicycle friendly states. An upcoming statewide summit this week at Transylvania University hopes to change that. WUKY’s Alan Lytle has details.

Making the entire state of Kentucky more bike and pedestrian friendly is the focus of a two-day conference coming this week to Transylvania University.

The 2024 Bike Walk Summit brings together more than 400 leaders in tourism, transportation, government, recreation, and education to share ideas and learn best practices.

Keith Lovan is with presenting sponsor – Bike Walk Kentucky:

"Since the last ranking was done, we've made major strides. We've created the nonprofit Bike Walk Kentucky. The Transportation cabinet has implemented a complete streets, roads and highways policy. Those are major things that we're missing during the last rankings," Lovan told WUKY.

The lineup of speakers includes Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, current state transportation cabinet secretary Jim Gray as well as Angie Schmitt – author of the book, Right of Way: Race, Class, and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths. The conference is this Thursday and Friday on the Transy campus, it’s free and open to the public.
