Fayette coroner adds his voice to chorus calling for changes to the profession's pay scale

Kentucky coroners are continuing to push for pay and benefit increases. Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn spoke to the issue at a hearing Frankfort this week.

Ginn told the Joint Committee on Local Government that outdated statutes are governing pay for coroners in the Commonwealth and if left unchanged, the profession will continue to fall behind.

"We're under a mandated old law from 1949... a bill many years ago that mandates our salary and it keeps it well within check of what any of the other officials are making," he said.

It's a pay scale that the coroner says has been updated for other local positions, such as jailers and county clerks, but not for their post. Ginn says some are operating with minimal resources and relying on help from local funeral homes.

"We've got a lot of good people around the commonwealth that provide a lot of good services to each one of our counties, but they're not being compensated the way they should be," Ginn added.

Coroners are hoping to convince policymakers to make pay changes through legislation
