: FRANKFORT, Feb. 21 – Rep. Nima Kulkarni, D-Louisville, asks a question about House Bill 47, an act related to religious liberty, in Wednesday’s House Judiciary Committee.

A three-term Kentucky Democrat who was tossed off the ballot by the Kentucky Court of Appeals has been allowed back on – after the state’s highest court reversed the decision. The decision comes with an asterisk, however.

Louisville Rep. Nima Kulkarni’s bid for re-election this year has been a bit of a roller-coaster ride – with the prominent Democrat being denied a spot on the ballot over a paperwork filing issue.

One of Kulkarni’s two required witnesses when she filed was not a registered Democrat at the time, per state rules. That witness’s party affiliation was changed just days later.

That was enough for the Kentucky Court of Appeals to disqualify Kulkarni.

But the state Supreme Court has reversed that decision, allowing Kulkarni back on the ballot – though the election results won’t be certified until the court makes its final decision after the primary.

Kulkarni is a well-known name in Frankfort. She’s running against William Zeitz, who tells the Courier Journal has no background in politics. No Republicans have filed for the seat.
