Since the decision two weeks ago, state lawmakers across the country have been scrambling to protect IVF. Here in Kentucky, three bills have been filed and Governor Andy Beshear says he supports them.

“I’m of the generation where numerous of my friends have amazing children that have grown up with mine, that I know so well, that wouldn’t be here without IVF. It is a gift from God that is helping people who want to be parents so badly to welcome special children into this world.” Beshear said, “Anything that needs to be done to protect IVF or IVF access in Kentucky, I am 100 percent for.”

One bill filed in the House by Democratic Rep. Daniel Grossberg states that "a fertilized human egg or embryo that exists outside of the human body shall not be considered an unborn child." He said after the Alabama ruling, he had to “protect women’s reproductive rights in Kentucky.”

Senator Cassie Chambers Armstrong, also a Democrat, filed a bill that would protect IVF providers from criminal liability for providing fertility treatments and clarify that it is a legal procedure in Kentucky. Chambers Armstrong released a statement saying Senate Bill 301 “is a direct response to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos can be considered children.”
