With DEI under the microscope in Frankfort, University of Louisville president joins UK in issuing support for diversity

Another major university in Kentucky is reaffirming its commitment to diversity, amid legislative moves to limit the scope of DEI, or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts.

Just days following a lengthy campus-wide statement emailed to University of Kentucky employees and students arguing in favor of staying the course on DEI, University of Louisville President Kim Schatzel has also issued a letter focusing on diversity at her campus.

Schatzel’s letter, however, doesn’t go quite as far as the one issued by UK President Eli Capilouto. Whereas Capilouto made his opposition to the DEI legislation explicit, the UofL president kept her comments more general.

She said, “…you cannot deliver a high-quality university education without a diverse classroom and campus,” but stopped short of referring directly to the bills under consideration in the Capitol, according to WDRB-TV.

So far the DEI bill that has advanced the furthest is Senate Bill 6, which would mandate that universities do away with any requirements that force students or faculty to endorse more than a dozen “discriminatory concepts,” laid out in the bill.

SB 6 passed the full Senate last week and is awaiting a committee assignment in the House.
