A pair of projects outside of the city’s growth boundary is receiving millions in local tax money in Lexington, despite the funds originally being recommended for infill projects within the boundary.

The Urban County Council voted to move forward with $1 million in incentives for the Lexington Sporting Club’s stadium and a $1 million dollar forgivable loan for a Keeneland expansion.

Council members had previously questioned whether the dollars should be allocated for projects not falling within the category of infill and redevelopment. Councilman David Sevigny raised the issue during an earlier discussion about the funds.

"I just want to make sure that if we're using funds that were set up for a particular purpose that we're using them for that particular purpose," he said.

City officials had said the fund was initially meant to encourage infill projects but could also be put toward job-generating projects.

The council ultimately voted unanimously to approve the incentive packages.
