Sen. Mitch McConnell is stepping up his rhetoric in response to the crises unfolding in Israel and Ukraine, along with heightened tensions in Taiwan.

In describing what he sees as a gathering threat to democracy worldwide, McConnell invoked a phrase not heard since the country launched its War on Terror in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

"What we have now is an axis of evil — China, Russia, and Iran," the senator said. "Iran taking care of funding all of these terrorists, being back up by these two big countries... This is a big crisis that needs to be confronted by the most important democracy in the world."

McConnell said Republicans will be taking a close look at the Biden administration’s massive aid package for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, along with money for U.S. border security. The minority leader said his conference will likely want to see changes to the proposal.

The long-serving senator said that, in many ways, the world is “more endangered today” than it has been in his lifetime.
