Any museum curator will tell you that putting together an exhibit that effectively tells a compelling story, perhaps addressing myths or highlighting underappreciated achievements, is a challenge under any circumstance. So, it’s no surprise that it took awhile for the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort to roll out a comprehensive past and present tribute to Kentucky’s women in uniform.
But now “Our Stories, Our Service: Kentucky’s Women Veterans” is ready for you to come and experience for yourself. WUKY's Alan Lytle recently did just that with curator Julie Maio Kemper.

The exhibit makes extensive use of photos, artifacts, mementos and ephemera to highlight the many unique and varied experiences Kentucky’s military women have had. The collection presents a thematic study of how women veterans from Kentucky’s many different geographic, economic, and cultural backgrounds navigated social and military challenges to serve. Kemper says the individual experiences of Kentucky’s women vets are part of a larger story: one that has evolved from being told to stay on the sidelines, to being crucial on the frontlines.
