Kentucky Republicans and Democrats trade fire over endorsements in the governor’s race

Associated Press

The candidates themselves aren't the only targets of attack in campaign season.

Kentucky Democrats are hoping gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron’s close ties to Sen. Mitch McConnell are a liability in the election this fall — pointing out the long-serving Senate minority leader’s low popularity rankings in a campaign email.

In a swing through Lexington this week, McConnell was asked if he would campaign alongside Cameron.

"Of course," the senator replied.

Cameron is often labeled a McConnell protégé, having served as the senator’s general counsel.

Meanwhile, Republicans aren’t impressed with endorsements for incumbent Democrat Andy Beshear in coal country, including from the United Mine Workers of America and a number of leaders in the state’s coal industry.

The Kentucky Republican Party downplayed the endorsements, adding that UMWA hadn’t employed any Kentucky miners in years and criticizing Beshear and his father, former Gov. Steve Beshear, for not doing more to protect coal.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
