Opposition to the Lexington Sporting Club’s proposed soccer complex between Newtown Pike and Russell Cave Road has scuttled the project.

Prospects for the ambitious soccer complex were already looking dimmer after a recent announcement from Mayor Linda Gorton that she couldn’t supportthe proposal. That was after hearing from concerned neighbors, including farmers and business owners.

Several of those concerned residents showed up to voice their worries at city meetings, with many citing the potential effects on surrounding horse farms.

Thursday, the Lexington Sporting Club announced it’s dropping the plans for the youth soccer fields while it hopes to “continue to work through the planning process with the proposed location” of a stadium.

Mayor Gorton has said she hopes to see stakeholders work together with the community to come up with a “better answer.”

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
