Gorton not backing current soccer complex proposal, seeks 'better answer'

LFUCG

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton says she can’t support a proposed soccer complex on the city’s northside, but left open the door to more discussion.

In an op-ed, the mayor writes the Lexington Sporting Club’s soccer complex – as currently envisioned – doesn’t reflect the kind of thoughtful growth and long-term planning that has preserved the city’s delicate balance of urban attractions and surrounding farms.

The proposal would see the construction of a 6,000-seat stadium, a dozen soccer fields, and 750 parking spots in an area between Newtown Pike and Russell Cave Road. And Gorton says she’s heard from farmers, business owners, and citizens with “grave concerns” about the project.

"I support balanced growth because it works — the history of our community shows us that we can protect the beauty of the Bluegrass, while allowing strong economic growth."

A number of those residents have been on hand at public meetings regarding zoning.

But Gorton added that her opposition isn’t about soccer. She said she’s excited about the Lexington Sporting Club’s goal of bringing professional soccer to Lexington and when it comes to the proposed complex, she hopes to see the community work toward “a better answer.”
