Early primary voting in Lexington moves to Kroger Field, for now

With three days of early, in-person voting now guaranteed under state law ahead of election days, that's left Lexington and other communities to find locations.

When it comes to voting, many are accustomed to lining up at a neighborhood school. But what if schools are still in session and not particularly keen on closing down — as they will be in May when the primaries hit.

Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins had crafted a plan that would have schools shut down for that time, but changes OKed by the legislature necessitated a new arrangement.

The new deal calls for early voting at UK's Kroger Field, the site also utilized as a mass testing and vaccination center earlier in the pandemic.

It's a workaround that Blevins admits will only buy his office time, as it's a temporary solution and a new location will be needed in the fall for the general election.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
