Lexington police have investigated 35 homicides in 2021, breaking the record set last year. As WUKY's Arlo Barnette reports, city leaders want to address the problem at the community level.
From the Associated Press:
Kentucky’s second-largest city broke its annual homicide record when a man was fatally shot this week. Media outlets report that the death was the 35th homicide in Lexington this year. It surpassed the record number of 34 set in 2020. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers says the root of the problem starts within the community. Weathers also believes the circumstances of today’s world could play a role in the rising homicide numbers. He pointed to social unrest and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
