Fayette Residents Can Now Access REAL ID Driver's Licenses

Associated Press

Fayette County residents can now apply for the long-awaited REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses known as Voluntary Travel IDs, but it will require a trip down the road to Frankfort.

Drivers wishing to obtain the licenses, which will enable card-holders to board domestic flights and enter restricted federal buildings once new federal guidelines go into effect in October, can apply at the state Transportation Cabinet’s Frankfort office.

For now, preparations are still underway to open a regional office in Lexington where residents can purchase the licenses.

To obtain a Voluntary Travel ID in Frankfort, Fayette County residents must have an existing driver’s license, permit, or identification card. They will also need to present a valid proof of identity, valid proof of social security number, and two valid proofs of residency. Additional documents may be needed if names or genders do not match.
