You may not be aware, but cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in women, yet most of the cutting edge research into heart health has focused on men. Researchers at the University of Kentucky are again marking Friday’s American Heart Association Go Red for Women Day by holding a Healthy Hearts for Women symposium to address this important disparity.
Healthy Hearts is the brainchild of Frédérique Yiannikouris and Analia Loria in the Department of Pharmacology & Nutritional Sciences in the UK College of Medicine.
"This is our contribution in addition to that important event," Loria told WUKY. "The University of Kentucky wants to show that it's aware of these disparities in health and to try to do something about it." Loria said.
The symposium, which is free and open to the public, features researchers from UK and universities across the country presenting new scientific advances in women's cardiovascular health. It takes place from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Pavilion A Auditorium in the UK Medical Center.
