On Wednesday, students at Marshall County High School will start the day with a ceremony to remember friends who were killed and injured when a fellow classmate opened fire on campus.
One year ago, authorities say then 15-year old Gabriel Parker walked into a common area of the school, pulled out a gun and started shooting, killing Bailey Holt and Preston Cope, both 15, and wounding 14 others. A lot has changed at Marshall County in the last year, students have to go through metal detectors and they can’t carry backpacks. Most students say it’s been inconvenient, but a small price to pay for safety.
Parker has been charges as an adult with two counts of murder and 14-counts of aggravated assault. Holt’s family and three students who were injured in the shooting are suing the school district, school officials, parker and his mother and stepfather.
