Fight Begins To Save Historic Building In Downtown Lexington

A local preservation group plans to appeal the decision to allow a former office building in downtown Lexington to be torn down for apartments. According to the Lexington Herald Leader, members of the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation plan to appeal a decision by Lexington's planning commission to approve a demolition permit for the two-story former state office building.

It sits on the corner of High and Upper streets in the Historic South Hill. According to the paper, the association doesn’t oppose the plan which will be developed by The Webb Companies, but they want the new building to be limited to four stories. The association president said that the building does not add to the character of the neighborhood, and they came to a compromise agreement. An attorney for the Blue Grass Trust want the building to be renovated since it’s one of few office buildings of its style downtown. An appeal hearing has not yet been scheduled.
