City Opens New Housing Units For Survivors Of Domestic Violence

Karyn Czar

It took a village of sponsors and after years of planning and construction, 24 new affordable apartments are being used by survivors of partner abuse.

On the edge of Fayette County, 12 new cottage style apartments line a quiet street on the GreenHouse 17 farm. They’re surrounded by acres of gardens, horses galloping in a nearby field and a playground for the kids. For Amy Feltner, who left an abusive relationship, it’s a new start for her and her children.

There are twelve more homes in downtown Lexington for families who are coming out of similar situations.  GreenHouse 17 Executive Director Darlene Thomas called these homes the next step beyond shelters. They provide safe and healing affordable housing for partner abuse survivors.
