The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has dismissed appeals from a county clerk in Kentucky who went to jail for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis had asked the court to dismiss her appeals of a federal judge's ruling ordering her to issue the marriage licenses. When she refused that order last year, she was sent to jail for five days.
Davis had asked for the dismissals because of a new Kentucky marriage law that removes the names of county clerks from marriage licenses.
The appeals court Wednesday said the new state law "will render these consolidated appeals moot." But in the same ruling Wednesday, the appeals court declined to vacate the contempt of court ruling that sent Davis to jail in September.
