UK Hosting Rescheduled Election Law Symposium

The rights, protections, and responsibilities of voters will be among the topics up for discussion at an election law symposium  this Friday hosted by the UK College of Law.  The event, rescheduled from January, will feature former Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson and current Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

College of Law professor Josh Douglas says they want to emphasize that democracy can be messy and that "elections can have consequences...especially on who wins an election...the hope is to demonstrate the importance of these issues on the ultimate functioning of our democracy," Douglas told WUKY.

Kentucky Law Journal Editor Mark Roth, who co-organized the event with Douglas says given the low turnout from last year's gubernatorial election (31%), and a presidential contest this year, the subject matter was a no-brainer.

"This is something that doesn't just affect lawyers and professors and scholars but this is something the everyday UK student or member of the Lexington community can come and listen to and see how this affects their lives," Roth said.

The symposium is free and open to the public.
