Hamburg Trees Scheduled For Removal

lexingtonky.gov

76 trees in Lexington’s Hamburg area are slated for removal next week. As Josh James reports, the city wants to halt the spread of an invasive beetle.

A number of the ash trees lining Star Shoot Parkway between Liberty Road and Sir Barton Way and Pink Pidgeon Parkway from Star Shoot to Alysheba Way are in various states of decay thanks to the Emerald Ash Borer – a dark metallic green insect first discovered in the U.S. in 2002. The aptly-named bugs are known for feeding on and eventually killing the trees they infest.

Urban Forester Tim Queary also says the Hamburg trees present a minor safety hazard, so the city has hired a contractor to remove them. The plan is to replace them with a variety of new species.

The Emerald Ash Borer was first found in Fayette County in 2010.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
