Democratic State Sen. Gerald Neal says he’s not sure if the momentum to remove a prominent marble statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis from the Kentucky Capitol Rotunda has reached critical mass yet, but he’s hearing more discussion about it than ever before.
"I'm talking about from the Greg Stumbos to the Robert Stivers, the leader of the House and Senate, as well as my colleagues in the leadership where I am in the Democratic caucus, our governor opening the door wide open for addressing this issue... I've never seen that before," Neal said during an interview with cn|2 Pure Politics.
Neal is a member of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and an acquaintance of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a South Carolina lawmaker who was killed during the recent shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Officials will revisit the Davis statue’s placement during a special August 5 meeting of the Kentucky Historic Properties Advisory Commission.
