Group Seeking Volunteers For MLK Day Of Service

Lexington’s Community Action Council is looking for volunteers for a program aimed at getting supplies to the city’s homeless veterans.

The program coincides with what’s called the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. The idea: bring community members together to collect personal hygiene and other products and to put together backpacks containing the supplies.

"Oftentimes when veterans come back home they don't have a place to stay," Cameron Minter with the Council says. "This is not solving the problem, but it's at least doing something to try to address the issue of homelessness with our ceterans."

This year, the council will also conduct a ceremony honoring local veterans of all branches of the armed forces. The backpack stuffing starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. Those who want to participate but cannot attend are encouraged to donate $25, or the cost of one backpack.
