Community Action Council Launches Award Named For Former Leader

Community Action Council in Lexington is seeking nominations for a new award created in honor of a former executive director.

The Jack E. Burch Spirit of Community Action Award was named after the CAC's longtime anti-poverty champion. Burch retired in 2013 after more than three decades at the helm.

"Everybody knows Jack was here for 34 years and just recently passed away shortly after his retirement. His advocacy and long fight combating poverty... we're looking for an individual for that particular award," says CAC executive director Malcolm Ratchford.

Lexington's CAC was one of many formed in the 1960s as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty.

Ratchford says the nominations for both the Jack E. Burch Spirit Award and the Dr. Abby Marlatt Community Partnership Award (given to a group) are due by August 8 and will be reviewed by a committee at the council.

Nominations can be submitted here.
