Fayette County Public Schools officials can expect the audit of the district’s finances in about three weeks, according to State Auditor Adam Edelen.

Prompted by allegations lodged by district budget director Julane Mullins that the school system’s budget woes were the result of irregular accounting practices and mismanagement, the investigation has taken longer than initially expected.

Edelen characterizes the process as complicated.

"There were a number of very public allegations made and after we got in and began our investigation another round of allegations was made," he says. "So it takes time to sort through that and come to the conclusion of what's really going on. We are rapidly approaching the point where , in at least the next few weeks, we'll be able to make public the results of this very thorough investigation."

Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton has been adamant that he and his staff have acted lawfully and the results of the audit will bear that out.

He has also requested that his annual evaluation be postponed until the report is made public.
