It may not come as a surprise for anyone tuned into Kentucky politics, but a Comer run for governor now appears to be taking shape.
The Agriculture Commissioner told WHAS-TV last week that he’s been floating the idea to possible running mates.
"We've met with several potential lieutenant governor candidates. Every one we've met with wanted to run on a ticket, so I'm confident that, should I decide to run, when we announce who our running mate will be the people of Kentucky will be very satisfied with that person," he said.
While Comer has yet to set a firm date for an announcement, he says he does not see any reason he would not run. Comer would face former Louisville mayoral candidate Hal Heiner in the Republican primary.
Although he had indicated a desire to stay out of the race until September to keep the focus on GOP efforts to take control of the state Senate, Comer says House Republicans have been urging him to enter the race sooner – in part to counter momentum gathering around Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jack Conway.
