State Auditor Adam Edelen Rules Out Gubernatorial Run

State Auditor Adam Edelen – widely expected to be prepping for a run for governor next year – is choosing instead to run for another term as auditor.

The 39-year-old Democrat says he remains open to a run for governor in the future, but now is not the right time.

"One of the things I had to make a real determination about is whether I wanted to spend the next 18 months focused on catching crooks, or being able to coach little league, or worrying about my name recognition. And I decided that I would rather be able to spend time with my family and do the great work we're doing here rather than worry about that," Edelen told WUKY.

For now, his departure leaves Attorney General Jack Conway well-positioned to win the Democratic nomination in 2015. Other potential candidates in his party include House Speaker Greg Stumbo, former Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, and former U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler.

Meanwhile, only one Republican has announced so far: Former Louisville mayoral candidate Hal Heiner added his name to the list in March. State Agriculture Commissioner James Comer is also considering a run.

Edelen says he’s leaving the door open to a future run for the top office and may make an endorsement before the end of the campaign.
