University of Kentucky Says There Is Little Support For Rupp Project

A letter sent sent to the Lexington Center Corporation blasts the way they have pursued finances for the proposed Rupp Arena renovation.

In the three page letter, UK President Eli Capilouto says the University has always supported the concept of the Rupp project and wanted to be a partner, but not at the expense of investment on the campus.  A portion of the letter reads:

“I am proud to be the President of our University, with its storied basketball heritage that generates such deep loyalty across Big Blue Nation.  And, I am committed fully to its continuing success.  But the University of Kentucky’s first responsibility is embedded in our mission as Kentucky’s flagship, land-grant, research institution—to educate Kentucky’s children and to conduct research and service that seeks to solve the toughest economic and health issues confronting our fellow Kentuckians.”

Capilouto also criticized the LCC for not having a solid financial plan and for releasing what he called inaccurate financial numbers to the media.  UK’s President said he sees little public support for the $350 million dollar renovation when there are so many other projects that need funding across that state.  He believes the Kentucky General Assembly echoed that point by voting against granting state money.

Mayor Jim Gray responded in a written statement by saying:

“Game-changing projects create passion and emotion, especially when things don't go as hoped, so I think it's important to step back, take a deep breath, and sit down with all our partners and work things out.

So far, the LCC has not responded to our request for an interview.
