Students from across the country are attending the National Conference on Undergraduate Research at the University of Kentucky. The event is an opportunity to showcase their various academic projects. Though many are unfamiliar with Kentucky, folks like Matthew McDougal of Keene State College have received a positive impression.
“I basically got a blessing on the way to the hotel, which I did not expect, being from Northern New Hampshire, but, that being said, it was such a great welcome to this area, and every person I’ve encountered so far has been nothing but friendly and polite," he said.
The majority of projects are in the sciences, but there are also a healthy amount of works in the arts and humanities. McDougal, a theater major, will talk about how he prepared for a one man show that depicts a German transvestite’s survival through both the Nazi and Communist regimes. Part of that involves presenting in costume.
“We’ll call it a German grandmother’s costume. Essentially I’ll be in front of a large group of people wearing a dress,” he added.
His work and that of over 4000 others will be on display at the conference, which runs on UK’s campus Thursday through Saturday. More information is available at the event's website.
