U.S. Senate candidates Mitch McConnell and Alison Lundergan Grimes are weighing in on Wednesday’s Supreme Court decision.
The ruling in McCutcheon vs. the Federal Election Commission further deregulates campaign contributions.
McConnell is praising the high court’s decision to strike down aggregate limits on donations to political parties as a confirmation of First Amendment rights. McConnell’s attorney, Bobby Burchfield, argued in favor of Alabama Republican donor Shaun McCutcheon before the court.
The ruling is expected to cut down on competition between candidates of the same party when it comes to maxing out donations.
Meanwhile, a Grimes spokesperson says the Democratic candidate disagrees with the court’s decision, adding that she’s encouraged that the court did not removal all limits on contributions.
Under the court’s ruling, donors will still be limited in the amount they can pledge to individual candidates and committees. They will, however, be allowed to donate to an unlimited number of candidates.
